Cranbrook & Sissinghurst Parish Council

web design

Because of the lockdown in the U.K. many places suffered a big drop in tourism.  Cranbrook & Sissinghurst Parish Council reached out and wanted to change that by launching a new tourism website, we said yes to the project.

The Brief

Cranbrook & Sissinghurst Parish Council wanted to draw attention to some of the fantasitic tourism spots, as well as the best hotels & restaurants that Kent has to offer.  They wanted to make it easy for tourusts to navigate the area and find these places to visit.

However, we all recognised that to achieve such a goal a simple static, text-based website wouldn't be sufficient.  Therefore we came up with the idea of presenting the information within an interecative map.  Users could browse the map on their desktop or mobile and click the places that seemed interesting to find out more information.

We designed and built the bespoke interactive map to fulfil this goal.  It was important that the map was interesting and exciting but remained very user friendly.

what we did

We built the whole website from scratch to ensure we could get it working exactly as we wanted it to, without any constraints from pre-existing templates.  The main focus was on functionality, to provide the best user experience and then add the design in afterwards.
User Experience Design
Possibly the most important aspect of the project, it was crucial to make the map user-friendly to provide the best user experience.  We tested out similar interactive maps to see what their limitations were and what we could do to improve.
User Interface Design
Once we had nailed the user experience we wanted to give the map a great user interface.  We wanted people to feel drawn to using the map by offering the users a fun and appealingly designed interface.
Bespoke Build
We knew that we wouldn't be able to achieve what we wanted to for this project by using an 'off the shelf' template for the foundation of the map.  So we built he whole thing with HTML, CSS & Javascript.  This way we had full control of the outcome.
User Experience Testing
It's hard to get a perfect product the 1st time around, so we user tested what we had build and based on the various user's feedback we refined and improved what we had built until we had something that worked optimally.
Responsive Design
As with almost all websites currently being built, we knew that this one had to be responsive across a range of devices.  As people's browsing habits change and evolve we must keep up and make sure website's like this respond to these changing demands.
On-Site SEO
Although we did not run any SEO or PPC campaign for Cranbrook & Sissinghurst Parish Council, we wanted to help get their website discovered.  Therefore we made sure that the website's on-site SEO was optimised to help with discoverability via search engines.

the results

The whole project took several months from the start of the design process to the final launch.  Due to the custom nature of the project it was a slightly longer process than our other website design & builds.

We were all very pleased with the final result and thrilled to offer something unique to help boost tourism in an area affected by the pandemic.
